Connor Dowling

Connor Dowling

Nominated by: Jodie, his mum
Sport of Interest: Soccer

I play first half in goals as I’m not scared of the ball and don’t let too many balls go in. I also get my fair share of goals or help my team mates line them up. I hope to play for the Soccoroos one day or Gold Coast United.

I do gymnastics twice a week I do a total of three and half hours a week. When i first started at TSS I was in level two but I have great upper body strength so I got to go up to level 3 for one of my classes. Next year I will start competing.

Ethan Paikea

Ethan Paikea

Nominated by: Demis, his mum
Sport of Interest: Rugby League

Ethan has just recently made the Under 12’s Queensland Invitational Rugby League Team. They travel down to Adelaide for the National Championship at the beginning of August. He also represented South Coast in Rugby League this year and last year as well. The reason he deserves Hot Tomato Sports Star of the Year is because he’s still a really great kid, very modest and still very helpful at home. He’s School Captain at his school and I think he’s a great role model for all the other students.

FINALIST NUMBER 15

Sophie Johnston

Nominated by: Joanne, her mum

Sophie has been playing basketball for two years. In that time she has had many fantastic accomplishments, including representing the Gold Coast in the U12 Premiere League in 2009 and then making it into the U14 Gold Coast Waves team as a bottom age player in 2010. Sophie recently made it into the Southcoast U12 team where she competed in the State Championships in Toowoomba for 7 days their team finishing with a Bronze Medal which was unbelievable. Whilst in Toowoomba there were around 120 competitors of which 10 were to be chosen for the Queensland State Team to compete in the National Championships Darwin in August 2010. Sophie was selected and we are so proud and excited for her as she has done an amazing job to get to into this State Team. We think Sophie deserves this grant as she is so dedicated to her sport but at the same time has an absolute ball whilst playing. She is so highly regarded by her friends and team mates and one day hopes to be as good as Gretal Tippett! .
